Rex Flowers: A Story of his 1961 Gemini Mk3A-09 Cosworth-Ford FJ Part 12 of 15
[Continued from Part 11]

Graham Hill, after an unhappy drive in the Rob Walker sponsored Ferguson P99 Climax 2.5 4WD had the misfortune to have the gearbox fail with less than a lap to go, so Hyslop took second place behind Surtees, with Palmer third. Histed made a brief pitstop on lap 73 but he went back onto the track to be classified as a finisher and was credited with fourth place, even though he had no brakes, no oil pressure and only second gear! Like Rex Flowers did with the Gemini, Bill Thomasen pushed his Cooper T51 Climax over the line to be 6th and Chris Amon was the last car running in 7th place having done only 44 laps.

Vic Hudson Memorial Meeting, Levin – Saturday 12th January 1963. After a change of engine following the seized motor at Pukekohe the previous weekend, the next event for Rex in his Gemini was the Vic Hudson Memorial Meeting held at Levin on Saturday 12th January 1963.
Graham Vercoe‘s ‘Golden Era” book at page 187 reports: “The entrants for the Levin International a week after the Pukekohe inaugural were greeted with a very wet [and cold] Friday for practice. Even then, Brabham showed he was not to be messed about with on the tight little circuit. He recorded a 55 seconds flat to be 1 second faster than both Surtees and McLaren (who was using his spare 2.5 motor here). Hyslop and Levin lap record holder, Shelly, both recorded 57.4 secs. Ireland did 57.6 secs in the Ferguson, Amon 59.0s and Palmer 59.9s. All of which was totally irrelevant to the grid positions for the main race which were determined by placings not fastest times, in the two preceding heats that included one for Kiwi drivers only. This may have been very patriotic but hardly wise, especially when Hyslop and Amon were slotted into the ‘internationals’ heat and the next fastest Kiwi, Palmer, lasted a couple of laps leaving David Young in the FJ/National Formula Cooper to win. As good as Young undoubtedly was, he was not hot enough to be on the front row of a grid with McLaren. Surtees, Maggs, Ireland and even Shelly behind him!

On race day, after a cold and grey start, the weather was fine with a light wind blowing down the start-finish straight. In Event 4, the first heat for the Vic Hudson Memorial main race, three cars were scratched (Forest Cardon’s Lycoming, B Harrison’s Lycoming and K Yeates’ Orchid 1172cc sports) so only 8 cars took the starter’s flag. Rex had qualified the Gemini in 4th place on the grid. Jim Palmer retired the big Cooper 2.7 after only a few laps with magneto trouble when well in the lead, so David Young in his Cooper T65 won the race from Ken Sager in his Lotus 20, with Rex Flowers in the Gemini Mk3A 1340cc in 3rd place. Rod Coppins was 4th in his unwieldy Maserati 250F-based Tec Mec sporting a front mounted Corvette V8 engine. Young’s race winning time was 7min 30.8 sec.

In Event 7, the second heat for the main race, neither McLaren (clutch) nor Shelly (broken engine mount) started, and neither of the two Bowmaker Lola T4s finished – Maggs (broken halfshaft), Surtees (transmission). Brabham won from Hyslop with Amon 3rd and Ireland 4th. Brabham’s race time was 7min 6.2 secs, and he set a lap record of 52.1 seconds
Event 13 Vic Hudson Memorial Trophy race over 28 laps. Rex qualified the Gemini in 9th place of 14 cars on the grid for the Vic Hudson Trophy Race and started from Row 3 of 4.

The Race: The ‘Sporting Motorist 1963’ report in the Unique Motor Books booklet covered the race as follows: “Brabham led the field into the first bend, with Ireland in very close attendance and Hyslop lying third. By the end of the first lap it was still these three from McLaren, Amon, Maggs, Surtees, Shelly and Young, with Thomasen, Levis, Sager, Flowers [13th] and Palmer bringing up the rear [with ignition problems – and soon to retire on lap 5 with a broken CWP]. McLaren got past Hyslop into 3rd place on the approach to the hairpin on the second lap, and Shelly was past Maggs into sixth place. Surtees was already in trouble with his gearbox again, and he was also soon to retire.
On lap 3 Amon, Shelly and Maggs all got past Hyslop, and two laps later McLaren was past Ireland into second place. Brabham had already built up a good lead. Meanwhile Palmer was out with transmission trouble [a broken Crown Wheel and Pinion] after five laps and Young dropped a lap or two at the pits – a lead had dropped off the distributor. McLaren and Ireland now raced close together, and a little distance back Shelly was on Amon’s tail. Behind Hyslop, now in seventh place, the rest of the field was a long way back. Going very fast on his home circuit, Shelly got past Amon on lap 6 and Ireland on lap 8, and now lay third. A few laps later Maggs also got past Amon, but otherwise there was little change until Amon retired with magneto trouble on lap 13.
Maggs eventually passed Ireland, and at half-distance the leaders were Brabham, Shelly, Maggs, Ireland and Hyslop. Behind these six was Levis, who had passed Thomasen early in the race, although never able to shake him off. McLaren crept steadily up on Brabham, with Shelly well back behind. But on the 19th lap McLaren spun [on ‘Cabbage Tree Corner’ or Hokio Bend] on the far side of the long bend out of the main straight – a spot where accidents often happen- damaged his car and was out of the race. The impression was that he had tried too hard.
On lap 23 Hyslop was out with a broken half-shaft. Interest now centred on a dice between Maggs and Shelly, whom the South African had passed again. But just as it seemed Shelly might have the best of it an upright on his rear suspension broke when he was only two and a-half laps from home, and he spun in close company with Maggs. With all these retirements Levis, after a dogged race, found himself in fourth place.
So the race ended with an easy win for Brabham, with Maggs (in second place) and Ireland the only ones to completed 28 laps. Thomasen was fifth and Sager sixth. Also still motoring were Young and Flowers (who had a long stop when a strap holding a fuel tank broke).”
